Video Tips

TIP 1: GET THE LIGHTING RIGHT

Good light is crucial for good photos. It can set the mood, create a successful exposure, and highlight what’s important in the composition.

Natural light can be a little easier to work with, since it doesn’t require lots of extra equipment. But if you shoot outdoors with natural light, don’t take photos at noon when the sun is directly above. This can make your images flat and overly bright. Instead, shoot during the last hour before sunset and the first hour after sunrise, otherwise known as the golden hour. The light at these times is softer and easier to work with.

TIP 2: COMPOSITION

Composition is how a photographer arranges elements inside the frame of an image.

Follow standard composition rules, such as the the rule of thirds. Don’t snap a shot so your subject sits in the middle of the image, place your subject in the left or right third of an image, and leave the other two thirds more open.

Once you’ve mastered shooting with the rule of thirds in mind, experiment with shooting at different angles and from different perspectives. Try to balance your shot, fill the frame with your subject, or think about leading lines that draw the viewer’s eye across the image.

TIP 3: PLAY

Don’t be afraid to get it wrong, take lots of shots and ignore the people around you.

By doing this you will learn what you love about photos or hate about them. After all the whole point is to capture those memories of life that we never want to forget.

TIP 1: STAY STEADY

This is extremely important. Cameras and phones can take lovely HD footage if it is perfectly still, but if you shake the sensor (move the camera/phone) the image quality can begin to degrade.

Also if you are going to do a movement, plan where you are going to walk so you don’t bump into things or trip. As well always leave a few seconds before & after so you can crop the footage to suite.

TIP 2: LIGHTING AGAIN

As with photos, lighting is important, try not to blow out the camera with the sun glaring in from behind. Or have lights pointing into your face.

A light from the side can work and gives contrast to the composition. Also think about those golden hours & if they can set the tone for your video. Don’t forget if you have limited light then you can use a lamp at home or film next to a windown.

TIP 3: PLAN

There is nothing wrong with a bit of practice or write out what you want to say. Rehearse in front of a mirror, record yourself and listen back or role play with your partner or friend.

Then when it comes to the time of recording even if you get it wrong keep going, this is a lot better than pausing and not saying anything. You can always retake the video and actual people may not even notice the mistake.
